You can thank Chamique Holdsclaw for this website because it was her performance in the 1996 NCAA National Championship game that hooked me on women’s basketball.
Back then I was a huge basketball fan but rarely watched women’s basketball. I only channel hopped to the championship game that night because there was nothing else on television that interested me. I had an appointment with a real estate agent to view a house that evening so I had only planned on watching a few minutes then leaving. Those few minutes turned into twenty minutes and a phone call to my agent explaining that I would be late and could not stay long once I got there. At halftime I dashed out the house, drove to my appointment, took a quick walk through, then hurried home. I didn’t miss one minute of the second half.
What moved me about Chamique? While watching the game I kept thinking over and over — she plays just like a dude! She moved like a dude, she shot like a dude. She was smooth and confident. I wanted to know more about her and subsequently, the Tennessee program.
Now I’m a women’s basketball and Lady Vol fan for life.
I know the women’s game has grown in popularity but it’s no where near (in my opinion) where it should be. The Women’s Basketball News Server is my little contribution to popularizing women’s basketball.
